The Red Bull Racing team has been in F1 Since 2005, but their roots go back a little bit further. It made its debut as Stewart Grand Prix in 1997 until Jackie Stewart, the former owner, sold it to Ford in late 1999. Ford rebranded the team to Jaguar Racing and had very little success over the next five years. The Jaguar Racing team was put up for sale in September of 2004 when Ford decided they could no longer compete in F1.
Red Bull, the energy drink company, bought the team and started racing as Red Bull Racing in 2005.
Christian Horner was placed as the team principal and is still the current team principal at Red Bull Racing. The two drivers that started out with Red Bull were David Coulthard and Christian Klien.
The team has a young driver program where Red Bull sponsor up and coming drivers. Many of the F1 drivers on the grid now went through Red Bull’s Junior team. It allows the drivers to train and practice while learning about F1 and becoming closer to achieving a spot on the grid.
Red Bull Racing had a deal with Renault to supply their engines for the team but that all changed in 2019. Red Bull decided to stop using Renault engines and start a partnership with Honda. It caused a lot of drama between the two teams that year and everyone was shocked by the news.
The team has 7 Drivers Championships and 6 Constructors Championships. They have been a very successful team these past couple of years – it is all thanks to Max Verstappen.
The two current drivers for Red Bull Racing are Max Verstappen and Sergio “Checo” Perez. Max is a 3 time winner of the Drivers Championship and has broken a lot of records in the years that he has been racing with the team.
Verstappen is a 26 year old Belgian and Dutch F1 driver. He first made his debut at the 2015 Australian Grand Prix. At only 17 years old, he became the youngest F1 driver to race on the grid. He started out at Toro Rosso but eventually replaced Daniil Kvyat at Red Bull Racing. At the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, he won his first ever F1 race.
He became a World Champion during the 2021 season where it was very close between him and Lewis Hamilton. He won the next two Championships after that. As of the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix, Verstappen holds 57 race wins, 36 pole positions, and 32 fastest laps which is very impressive for someone of his age.
The other Red Bull Driver, Checo Perez, is a 34 year old Mexican F1 driver. He made his debut during the 2011 season and he started out with Sauber. He won his first race at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix. He didn’t move to Red Bull until the 2021 season and he is currently under contact with Red Bull until the end of this season.
So far this season, Red Bull has won every single race except for the Australian Grand Prix. I can’t wait to see if this season will be a repeat of last year or if other teams will finally beat Red Bull.
